BEL HOMMAGE DE WINFRIED KRAMER POUR FEU FOUAD HABASH

Fouad HABASH (Syria) died last week.

Winfried Kramer writes: “It is with great sadness when I learnt today that Fouad Habash is dead. I got to know him via letters in the 1970s when I first published the National Records Book after Luigi Mengoni's resignation as its editor. He then was the only reliable source from Arab Asia to supply the ATFS with results from that area. From 1981 on, he became the co-editor of that publication and remained in this position until today. For a long period he published Champion d'Arabe with the major results from the Arab world, he was a technical director to the Arab Athletics Federation and worked for the Saudi Arabian Federation until his death. Just a few days ago before this he had attended the first meeting of the women's committee in the Arab athletics association in Doha

I first personally met him in 1993 in Stuttgart at the world championships and then every two years at that occasion. Together with Heinrich Hubbeling, whom he supplied with the data from the Arab world, we spent many hours together and he gave us insight into what was going on there. In the last few years, time and again he had to see a hospital in my hometown of Neunkirchen, where a medical specialist from Syria, his mother country, treated him. We met him last in Berlin during the world championships, and although he was almost 90, he still attended the ATFS meeting and most of the athletics events in the stadium. In spite of his old age, his death came suddenly and unexpectedly. Heinrich Hubbeling and I will always remember him as the man in the white suit, with a great knowledge of athletics, who was always more than friendly to us.
